War Between Russia and Ukraine Continues, Trump Steps In With New Conditions
Kyiv/Washington, August 18 – The war between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of ending, even after a long and devastating period of conflict. Global efforts to mediate peace have so far failed, despite repeated attempts by veteran world leaders to broker a truce.
In a surprising development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has stepped into the matter, announcing that he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday (August 18). His involvement has sparked fresh debates on Washington’s intentions and strategy regarding the war.
America’s Dual Strategy?
Trump’s intervention was initially viewed as a sign that the United States sought to support Ukraine. However, recent statements suggest that Washington may be pursuing a dual approach. The U.S. had previously supplied weapons to Kyiv to strengthen its defense against Russia. Now, Trump has indicated that Ukraine must make significant concessions if peace is to be achieved.
Trump’s Conditions for Peace
According to a report by CNN, Trump stated:
“The war may end immediately if President Zelenskyy agrees, but certain conditions must be accepted. Ukraine will have to leave Crimea, and it cannot join NATO.”
Crimea remains one of the most disputed territories in the region. Russia annexed it in 2014, although under international law it is still recognized as part of Ukraine. Trump’s statement has therefore stirred controversy, raising questions about whether such concessions would undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Trump–Putin Meeting in Alaska
Just days earlier, on Friday (August 15), Trump held a private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The talks reportedly lasted about three hours and focused on ending the Ukraine war.
Following the meeting, both leaders addressed the media in a brief 12-minute press conference, but avoided answering major questions. Trump described the dialogue as “positive” and claimed that both sides had “agreed on many issues,” though he admitted that no final deal was reached.
The Road Ahead
With Trump now preparing to meet President Zelenskyy, the international community is watching closely. Whether his conditions will be acceptable to Ukraine—or whether they might tilt the balance in Russia’s favor—remains uncertain. For now, the war continues, and hopes for a breakthrough are once again tied to high-stakes diplomacy.
