Hope for the end of the shutdown in America.
The shutdown that has been going on for 41 days in America is going to end soon. The Senate has approved the bill related to government funding. This is a big step towards ending America’s longest shutdown ever. Due to this shutdown, millions of people did not get food benefits, hundreds of thousands of federal employees did not get salaries and air traffic was also disrupted.
This bill passed 60-40 in the Senate. Almost all Republicans and eight Democrats supported this. Some Democrats tried to tie health insurance subsidies to the funding, which expires at the end of this year. However, the bill calls for voting on subsidies in December. It is not certain that the subsidy will continue. This subsidy benefits 24 million Americans.
Employee retrenchment plan canceled
The bill provides that funding for federal agencies that expired on October 1 will be restored. Also, President Trump’s plan to lay off federal employees has been stopped. Now no federal employee can be fired till January 30.
This bill will now go to the House of Representatives, where Republican MPs have a majority. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he wants to pass it as soon as possible and will send it to President Trump for his signature. Trump described this agreement as very good.
Increase in government expenditure by 1.8 trillion dollars
This bill extends the government’s funding till January 30. This will increase the government’s annual spending by approximately $1.8 trillion, which will take the national debt to close to $38 trillion. However, many Democrat MPs are angry with this bill. He says there is no guarantee that health insurance subsidies will be extended.
The bill also includes a provision to fund the SNAP food-subsidy program through September 30 of next year. This will not interrupt food aid during the next shutdown.
Couldn’t take advantage of shutdown: Democrat MPs
Senior Democrat Congressman Dick Durbin said that the shutdown was an opportunity to move towards better policies, but it did not happen. In a survey conducted in late October, 50% of Americans blamed Republicans and 43% blamed Democrats for the shutdown.
