Will NATO break? Why is the world’s strongest military organization on America’s radar?

donald trump

There has been an uproar in world politics after the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by American soldiers. Immediately after this action, US President Donald Trump has come forward in an openly aggressive manner. Trump has given an open warning not only to Venezuela but also to Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Iran and even Denmark, an important member of NATO.

The biggest stir has been created by Trump’s statements regarding Greenland. Trump has long described mineral-rich Greenland as a national security need for America. Recently, while talking to journalists in Air Force One, he said that we want Greenland from the point of view of national security. We will talk about this in 20 days. It was only after his statement that NATO member countries opposed Trump.

Attack on Greenland means end of NATO – Danish PM

After this statement of Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen took a tough stance. He clearly said that if America launched a military attack on any NATO country, it would be the beginning of the end of NATO. Frederickson warned that if the US attacked any NATO member, NATO and the entire security system built after World War II would collapse.

Europe’s open support, signs of distance from America

Trump’s threats are showing both fear and anger in Europe. From Nordic countries to Britain have supported the right to self-determination of Denmark and Greenland. European leaders fear that after military action in Venezuela, Trump may take similar steps on Greenland. Greenland may be largely autonomous, but it is part of Denmark and therefore also a part of NATO. In such a situation, an attack on it will be considered a direct attack on NATO.

What is NATO and why is it important?

North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO was established in 1949. Initially there were 12 countries in it, which included America, Canada, Britain and France. Its basic principle is that if any one member country is attacked, the other countries will come forward to protect it.

NATO was formed primarily to prevent Soviet Russia’s influence in Europe after World War II. In response, the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact in 1955, which ended with the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. After this many former communist countries joined NATO.

Why is the attack on Greenland an attack on NATO?

Both America and Denmark are member countries of NATO. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, but due to its strategic and national security importance, it has been in the US’s eyes for a long time. If Donald Trump tries to forcibly annex Greenland to the US, it would be a direct violation of NATO’s core principles. According to Article 5 of NATO’s charter, if there is an attack on one member country, it is considered an attack on all the member countries. In such a situation, other countries have to come together to respond to that threat. That means an attack on Greenland would be like a conflict not only with Denmark but with the entire NATO.

Why is America irritated with NATO?

Meanwhile, voices of rebellion against NATO have also increased within America. Republican MP Thomas Massey had introduced a bill in the US Parliament in December 2025 in which America has been demanded to be pulled out of NATO. His argument is that the Cold War is over and NATO has now become a burden for America. This is not the first time that the usefulness of NATO is being openly debated in American politics.

America’s contribution to NATO’s defense budget is about 16 percent. Trump has raised the issue many times before that America alone is bearing the huge expenses of NATO. Last year, i.e. in 2025, he had demanded the remaining member countries to spend 5 percent of their GDP on defense expenditure, which many countries had termed as impractical and excessive. In his first term and now also at the beginning of his second term, Trump has indicated to distance himself from NATO.
