Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi
On one hand, America and Israel are seen continuously targeting Iran’s nuclear program. On the other hand, now Iran has appealed to the United Nations regarding these two. Iran has asked the United Nations to take strict measures against America and Israel, because they are responsible for the attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites in June.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the US bears “criminal responsibility” after President Donald Trump admitted last week that he had ordered Israel to carry out the first attack. In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council on Wednesday, Araghchi said the US and Israel had committed an “attack” against Iran and “appropriate action” should be taken against them.
demand compensation
Araghchi said that both these countries should be held responsible for their actions and Iran should be compensated for the damage caused. The letter read, “The US and Israeli regimes should provide compensation for the damage caused in Iran, which should include reparations for the damages.
The Iranian minister said that Trump’s open acceptance of his role in allowing the attacks is clear evidence of America’s involvement. “President Trump and other US officials are criminally responsible for the June 13 attacks,” he said, and appealed to the United Nations to take action under international law. Neither the US Mission to the UN nor Guterres’ office immediately responded to requests for comment.
Trump had accepted
Trump acknowledged this on November 6, when he told reporters that he was “fully responsible” for Israel’s first attack on Iran. This statement of the President has been widely shown by Iranian state media as evidence of American role. Iran says that this attack was the beginning of the 12-day war between the two countries.
According to Iranian reports, more than 900 people were killed in these attacks, including many senior military officers. Araghchi said Trump’s statement further strengthened Iran’s claim that the US was not just supporting Israel, but was directly controlling its military operations.
“This also does not affect the criminal responsibility of all individuals, including Israeli regime officials, who ordered, carried out, or in any way facilitated war crimes,” Araghchi wrote in his letter.
What did you say about the nuclear deal?
This new appeal to the United Nations has come at a time when both Washington and Tehran have recently indicated readiness for talks. Earlier this week, Araghchi’s deputy said Iran was still interested in reaching a “peaceful nuclear deal” with the US.
Last month, Trump said Washington was ready for talks “when Tehran is ready”, and also stressed that “the hand of friendship and cooperation is open”.
Despite these statements, tensions are still high due to months of military clashes and accusations. Tehran has stressed that the United Nations should give a strong response to the “illegal war action” directed by the US and carried out by Israel.
