“15 Times More Than Delhi…” Why Did the White House Compare Chicago Murders With India and Pakistan?

Amid US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to deploy the National Guard in Chicago, a major statement from the White House has triggered debate. Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt compared Chicago’s murder rate with that of New Delhi (India’s capital) and Islamabad (Pakistan’s capital).

Leavitt claimed that “the murder rate in Chicago is more than double that of Islamabad and nearly 15 times higher than New Delhi.” She argued that these figures highlight the urgency of Trump’s new executive order, which proposes deploying special National Guard units to deal with law-and-order issues in the city. However, she did not cite any official report to back the numbers.

Trump’s Threat vs. Mayor’s Response

President Trump has repeatedly described Chicago as a “mess” and threatened to send in the National Guard. In response, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson issued an executive order on Saturday (August 30, 2025), blocking federal law enforcement officers from operating in the city.

According to Bloomberg, Johnson said, “We don’t want military posts or armored vehicles on our streets, and we don’t want to see families being torn apart. We will take every step necessary to protect the rights of Chicago residents.”

Political Showdown Escalates

This clash reflects deepening political fault lines across the US. While Trump is pushing for aggressive crime-control measures, Democratic mayors nationwide accuse his administration of infringing on civil rights through federal immigration raids and anti-crime crackdowns.
