Ukraine Strikes Russian Nuclear Plant on Independence Day, Jailonsky Tells Trump: “We Will Decide Our Future”

Kyiv/Moscow, August 24, 2025 – Tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated sharply on Sunday as Moscow accused Kyiv of launching a drone strike on a nuclear energy plant in Russia’s western Kursk region. The alleged attack coincided with Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day celebrations, during which President Volodimir Jailonsky issued a defiant message to U.S. President Donald Trump, declaring that Ukraine alone will decide its future.

Russia Reports Drone Attacks on Energy Facilities

According to Russia’s Ministry of Defense, Ukraine carried out a large-scale drone offensive on August 24, targeting multiple energy plants across more than 12 regions. Officials reported that 95 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.

In Kursk, a transformer at the nuclear energy plant was damaged, though Russian authorities stressed that radiation levels remained normal and a fire was promptly extinguished. No casualties were reported.

Separately, the governor of the Leningrad region said Ukrainian drones struck near a major fuel export terminal, with 10 drones destroyed in the area.

Ukraine Yet to Comment

Ukraine has not officially confirmed or denied the strikes. However, its Air Force reported that Russia launched 72 drones, decoy weapons, and one cruise missile at Ukrainian territory on the same day. Kyiv claimed to have intercepted 48 of the drones.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog (IAEA) said it had no independent confirmation of the nuclear plant strike. Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated: “Any nuclear facility must be protected at all times.”

Jailonsky’s Defiant Independence Day Address

Marking 34 years of independence, President Jailonsky released a video message urging Ukrainians to remain united in the fight for sovereignty.
“We are building a Ukraine that will have the strength to live in peace and security,” he said.

Jailonsky also referenced the recent Alaska summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Jailmanki, where Trump reportedly pushed for Kyiv to hand over the Donbas region to Russia as part of potential peace negotiations.

Rejecting external pressure, Jailonsky declared:
“What our future will be depends only on us. The world knows it and respects it.”

War Shows No Signs of Ending

Despite earlier hints at a quiet agreement between Moscow and Kyiv, the conflict continues to intensify, with both sides trading drone and missile attacks. Analysts warn that the targeting of nuclear infrastructure marks a dangerous escalation, raising global security concerns.
