Trump’s tough stance regarding Green Card, travel ban will increase problems for countries including Iran-Afghanistan

green card

The American administration is preparing a new immigration policy. Under this, President Donald Trump’s travel ban can significantly limit green cards and other immigration benefits for citizens. Especially for people from those countries which are included in Trump’s travel ban.

In June, President Trump imposed a travel ban on 12 countries in Africa and the Middle East. People from these countries cannot travel to America – Afghanistan, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. With the new policy, it may become more difficult for people from these countries to go to America.

It will be difficult to get a green card

According to this report, if citizens of these countries are already living in America and all this happened before being included in the travel ban list, then now it will be difficult for them to get a green card or other immigration approval, as reported by The New York Times quoting draft documents.

The report said this policy change is a major step towards increasing strictness on immigrants coming from countries which the administration says do not adequately verify official documents. This change will make it more difficult to stay in America for those people who had already reached the country before the travel ban was implemented.

Partial ban on 7 countries

Apart from these 12 countries, partial restrictions are also applicable on 7 other countries. Citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela cannot enter the United States permanently or obtain certain visas.

The administration has also given some exceptions to the travel ban. Existing visa holders, green card holders, athletes traveling for the 2026 FIFA World Cup or the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and Afghan nationals eligible for the Special Immigrant Visa Program are exempted.

What will be the changes in the policy

According to the New York Times report, even though there has been no official announcement in this regard, the change in the new policy is considered to be an extension of the administration’s effort to increase strictness on immigrants coming from countries which the government says do not do adequate screening and vetting of official documents.

In draft documents, the agency has said that some countries do not share sufficient vetting and screening information. In some countries, the authorities required to issue passports and other documents are also not competent enough, making it difficult for the agency to determine whether an immigrant from that country is eligible for the relevant benefits.

What is a green card?
