Washington/New Delhi, Sept 1, 2025 — US President Donald Trump’s recent statement calling the Indo-US trade deal a “unilateral tragedy” has drawn sharp criticism from American media and analysts, who warn that his approach could strain relations with India.
Trump Targets India Over Trade
On Monday, Trump criticized India for purchasing large amounts of oil and military equipment from Russia while buying relatively little from the United States. He added, “Few people know we do very little business with India, but they do a lot of business with us. This has been a completely one-sided relationship for decades.”
Trump also acknowledged India’s recent offer to cut tariffs to zero, but said it came “too late.” Analysts argue that the tariffs imposed by Trump appear retaliatory, pushing India closer to China and Russia.
PM Modi, Putin, and Xi Jinping Cannot Be Ignored
The comments come as leaders from India, Russia, and China met at the SCO Summit in Tianjin. NBC News reported on the summit visuals, noting that PM Modi, President Vladimir Putin, and President Xi Jinping were seen holding hands, exchanging greetings, and laughing together — optics that American analysts say cannot be ignored.
Experts warn that Trump’s approach may have undermined the US’s multilateral strategy, as the president focused on bilateral pressure rather than building alliances to counter China.
US Embassy Efforts to Preserve Relations
Amid the criticism, the US Embassy in New Delhi emphasized ongoing cooperation. A spokesperson stated, “The partnership between the US and India continues to reach new heights. This month, we are exploring opportunities in defense, development, and innovation. The relationship between our peoples remains a permanent friendship.”
Former White House officials, including ex-NSA John Bolton, have also expressed concern over Trump’s unilateral approach, suggesting that the president’s statements reflect personal displeasure rather than a strategic policy stance.
