How much oil was imported?

According to new data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India has imported 7.7 million tonnes of oil from Russia in November 2025. This was 35.1% of the country’s total oil imports that month. This was about 7% more than the quantity imported in November 2024 and the highest since May 2025. In value terms, India imported Russian oil worth $3.7 billion in November 2025. In the month of November, this was 34% of the total oil import bill of the country.

America had increased the tariff

In August 2025, America had increased the tariff on Indian imports from 25% to 50% as a penalty for the import of Russian oil. This happened despite the fact that India had reduced imports of Russian oil on a year-on-year basis in seven of the eight months before August.

According to sources in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, there is growing frustration in the government over the fact that despite India’s desire to reduce oil imports from Russia, no significant progress has been seen in resolving the tariff issue with the US.

India’s balanced step towards America

Despite the disappointments received from America, India’s move appeared to balance American interests. India has continued to proceed with caution. Talking about last November, India’s oil import from America reached the highest level in seven months. This was approximately 2.8 million tonnes. Its total cost was $1.4 billion. As a result, the US share in Indian oil imports increased to 12.6% that month. It was 4.2% a month ago and 5.1% a year ago.
