A fresh wave of layoffs has struck Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, sparking uncertainty among fans about the fate of Lara Croft’s next adventure. This marks the second round of job cuts in 2025, with the studio citing “evolving business conditions” as the reason behind the tough decision.
While the company, owned by Embracer Group, has not revealed the exact number of employees affected, it assured players that the next Tomb Raider game remains unaffected despite the restructuring.
📉 Layoffs Amid Industry Shifts
The announcement came via LinkedIn, where Crystal Dynamics confirmed parting ways with multiple team members. The move follows major disruptions in the gaming industry, including the cancellation of Microsoft’s Perfect Dark reboot, which Crystal Dynamics was co-developing alongside The Initiative.
Back in March 2025, the studio had already let go of 17 employees, labeling the cuts as “necessary for long-term growth.” Now, with another round of layoffs, many are questioning whether even AAA franchises are safe from the turbulence.
🎮 Tomb Raider Development: Still on Track
Despite the shake-up, Crystal Dynamics reassured fans that development on the upcoming Tomb Raider, published by Amazon Games, continues without interruption.
Built on Unreal Engine 5, the new title is expected to be the largest and most immersive Tomb Raider yet, delivering a single-player, narrative-driven experience. Though details remain scarce, Lara Croft’s next chapter is being described as her most ambitious journey so far.
Amazon Games VP Christoph Hartmann also echoed confidence earlier this year, confirming that progress has been “steady and strong” despite Embracer’s internal shakeups.
🔮 What Lies Ahead?
For now, Crystal Dynamics insists its focus is on building a “creative, sustainable, and resilient tomorrow.” However, the repeated layoffs across the industry hint at bigger challenges facing game studios worldwide.
The biggest question fans are asking: Could these changes eventually impact the launch timeline of Tomb Raider’s next chapter?
For now, the answer seems to be no — but uncertainty lingers as the gaming market grows increasingly volatile.
