Increasing protests in Iran
Protests are increasing in Iran. People’s anger is increasing rapidly regarding inflation and economic crisis. Meanwhile, at least 4 people died in clashes between protesters and security forces in western Iran on Saturday. Two human rights organizations alleged that the Revolutionary Guards opened fire on the protesters. Demonstrations continued in many cities across the country on Saturday also. These demonstrations started due to anger against rising inflation in Iran. The violence in these demonstrations is increasing day by day. According to activists, these demonstrations are the largest in Iran since the 2022-2023 movement.
Norway-based human rights organization Hengaw said Revolutionary Guards opened fire directly on protesters in the Malekshahi area of Ilam province in western Iran. In this, 4 people from Iran’s Kurdish minority community died. The organization also said it was investigating whether two more people had died. According to him, dozens of people have also been injured.
4 people died
Iran Human Rights NGO, also based in Norway, said at least four people were killed and 30 injured after security forces attacked a demonstration in Malekshahi. Inside Iran, the media presented a different picture. Mehr News Agency reported that a Revolutionary Guard was killed when rioters tried to enter a police station. According to AFP, based on government statements and media reports, these demonstrations have reached at least 30 cities.
Protests took place at 174 places
According to official reports, at least 12 people, including members of the security forces, have died in the clashes since Wednesday. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said that in the last 7 days, demonstrations have been recorded in at least 174 places in 60 cities in 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces.
During this period at least 582 people were arrested and at least 15 protesters died. However, these figures could not be confirmed immediately.
Why did the demonstrations start?
These demonstrations began last week when traders in Tehran’s famous market (Bazar-e-Tehran) closed their shops due to rising inflation. Then within no time this demonstration spread to other areas of the country and even to universities.
These protests began in Tehran on 28 December 2025, when shopkeepers went on strike to protest against rising inflation and the economic crisis. The anger of the people in the country erupted when the Iranian currency Riyal fell to a record low of 14.2 lakh Riyal against one dollar. Also, according to government data, the inflation rate reached 42.2 percent in December, which is 1.8 percent more than November. Also, the prices of food items increased by 72 percent as compared to last year, while the items related to health and medicines became costlier by 50 percent.
