Amidst increasing tension with China, Taiwan has purchased an air defense system worth 500 million pounds (Rs 5180 crore) from America. This modern air defense system has been made by American company Raytheon. It is called National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS). NASAMS will help protect Taiwan from air attacks, drones and cruise missiles. This system operates from the ground and can attack medium range targets.

After getting NASAMS, Taiwan will become the third country in Asia, which will have this modern technology. Earlier this system has been installed in Australia and Indonesia. Its total cost is approximately 700 million dollars i.e. 530 million pounds.

Features of NASAMS

NASAMS missiles can attack targets up to a distance of 20 miles (32 km) and can operate at an altitude of 10 thousand to 50 thousand feet. Along with this, it also has the capability to stop short-range ballistic missiles. Ukraine used it against Russia, where it intercepted more than 900 airstrikes with 94% success. Taiwan is hoping to achieve similar success with this system.

China considers Taiwan as its part

China considers Taiwan as its part and can also take military action to gain control here. US representative in Taiwan Raymond Green said that America’s commitment to Taiwan is strong. America is supporting Taiwan’s security not just through words but also through actions. America is also providing industrial and technical cooperation to increase Taiwan’s defense capability. This project is expected to be completed by 2031.

Taiwan buys all weapons from America

Almost all of Taiwan’s defense technology comes from America. This has been possible under the Taiwan Relations Act. This law allows non-official relations between the two countries, but ensures security and defense cooperation. NASAMS will greatly strengthen Taiwan’s air defense and help deal with the potential Chinese threat.

After the introduction of this system, there will be a big improvement in Taiwan’s security and air capability. This will not only protect against missiles and drones, but will also make Taiwan more prepared and stronger for possible attacks by China. With this step, an attempt is being made to maintain balance in regional tensions.
