Controversy over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi

Recently, US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met. But, this recent meeting upset a woman. Actually, the widow of journalist Jamal Khashoggi expressed displeasure over this.

Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered in the Istanbul Consulate of Saudi Arabia in the year 2018. Due to this, his widow expressed displeasure over this meeting. “I was very saddened by it, it was disappointing,” Hanan Elatar Khashoggi told AFP about the meeting between the crown prince and Trump.

Why did you get angry at the meeting?

Hanan Elatar Khashoggi said, “Jamal Khashoggi was a steady, brave, transparent and professional journalist,” and refuted Trump’s description of him as “extremely controversial.” Trump welcomed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday. This was the Saudi prince’s first visit to the White House after Khashoggi’s murder in 2018. Khashoggi was reportedly strangled to death at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and then his body was dismembered.

Who was Jamal Khashoggi?

Khashoggi was a US resident who used to write in The Washington Post criticizing Saudi Arabia. A US intelligence report released by Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden said the assassination was ordered by the crown prince, but Trump insisted his guest had no knowledge of it.

Khashoggi’s widow also said she was shocked when Trump scolded an ABC News reporter who questioned the crown prince about Khashoggi’s murder.

Wrote a letter to Trump

Khashoggi’s widow said she had written to Trump to help him seek compensation from Saudi Arabia for her husband’s murder, but received no response. He has also demanded a face-to-face meeting with the Crown Prince. When asked in the Oval Office, the Crown Prince called Khashoggi’s killing “a big mistake.”

“I want to recover my husband’s remains so he can be given a dignified burial, and I also want to demand an official apology and financial compensation,” she said. Hanan Elatar Khashoggi, who has been granted asylum in the US, said she was “deeply disappointed” that the US was not following democratic values.

Saudi Arabia has questioned his claims, saying the marriage was not properly registered. At the time of the murder, Khashoggi had gone to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to complete the paperwork required for his marriage to his Turkish fiancée.
