Nikki Haley Urges Trump to Strengthen Ties With India, Calls It Vital to Counter China Amid Tariff Dispute

Washington/New Delhi: Former US ambassador to the United Nations and Republican leader Nikki Haley has urged former President Donald Trump to address ongoing tensions with India, stressing that New Delhi remains America’s most crucial partner in balancing China’s growing global influence.

Haley’s remarks come as Washington and New Delhi face friction over India’s large-scale purchase of Russian crude oil, which the Trump administration argues indirectly funds Russia’s war in Ukraine. In response, Trump has threatened to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods — on top of the 25 percent duties already levied.

Haley’s Advice: Dialogue Over Dispute

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Haley wrote: “India should take Trump’s talk seriously on the issue of Russian oil and find a solution with the White House as soon as possible. The friendship and goodwill between the world’s two largest democracies provide a strong foundation to move beyond the current stress. Tough conversations on Russian oil imports and trade differences are necessary, but our shared goals must remain the priority. America must have a friend like India to face China.”

Haley emphasized that both nations must not allow disagreements to overshadow decades of strategic cooperation, warning that prolonged disputes could benefit Beijing.

Trade Tensions and Russian Oil

Haley highlighted that India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil has become a key irritant for Washington, which accuses New Delhi of indirectly supporting Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine. Trump’s proposed tariffs, she noted, could severely strain bilateral trade ties, especially given India’s historically high tariff rates — nearly five times higher than the US average in 2023.

Despite these concerns, Haley argued that India should not be equated with China. She pointed out that while Beijing has also purchased Russian oil, it has largely escaped punitive measures from Washington. According to Haley, damaging ties with New Delhi would undo 25 years of progress and hand a strategic advantage to China.

India’s Role in Supply Chains and Defense

In a recent article for Newsweek, Haley stressed that India’s role is critical to the United States, especially in reconfiguring global supply chains away from China. She noted that industries such as textiles, affordable smartphones, and solar panels — difficult to manufacture competitively in the US — could find large-scale alternatives in India.

She also highlighted India’s growing importance in defense cooperation. As a major buyer of American military equipment, India’s involvement not only strengthens bilateral security ties but also contributes to stability in the Middle East.

Furthermore, India’s strategic geography — positioned at the crossroads of China’s trade and energy routes — enhances its value as a counterweight to Beijing. “If a major conflict arises, India’s role could create significant difficulties for China,” Haley wrote.

The Bigger Picture

Haley’s intervention underscores a broader concern among US policymakers: that short-term disputes over tariffs and energy trade should not derail a long-term strategic partnership that is vital for both nations. As Washington seeks reliable allies to counter China’s growing power, Haley made it clear that India remains irreplaceable.
