Kathmandu, Sept 9, 2025: In a dramatic political development, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has officially resigned today following weeks of violent protests, mass ministerial resignations, and mounting public anger over his government’s sweeping social media ban.
Oli submitted his resignation letter to President Ram Chandra Poudel this afternoon, ending his embattled tenure as the country’s leader. His decision comes after intense pressure from coalition partners, opposition parties, and a relentless youth-led “Gen-Z Revolution” that paralyzed Nepal with demonstrations across major cities.
Resignation Triggered by Unrest
Oli had earlier resisted calls to step down, instructing UML ministers to remain firm despite the departure of nine coalition ministers. However, escalating protests, which saw the torching of ministers’ homes and violent clashes with security forces, forced his hand.
According to sources, Oli had also been preparing to fly to Dubai for medical treatment amid rising security concerns, a move widely criticized as an attempt to escape accountability.
Gen-Z Revolution Wins First Victory
The protests were sparked by the government’s controversial decision on September 4 to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and X. Youth across the country, who branded their movement the “Gen-Z Revolution”, mobilized against what they called an attack on freedom of expression and democracy.
Even as curfews and crackdowns were imposed, demonstrations only grew, with civil society groups, journalists, and lawyers joining the movement.

President Poudel is expected to call an emergency meeting with parliamentary leaders to chart the way forward. A caretaker government could be formed until fresh elections are held, though political uncertainty remains high.
