Kathmandu: Nepal is gripped in political turmoil after the sudden resignation of nine ministers from the ruling Nepali Congress. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, however, has directed his UML ministers not to resign “at any cost,” signaling a desperate bid to hold on to power.
According to Nepali media, Oli told his cabinet that Monday’s violent turn in protests was due to “external anti-social infiltration,” and assured that culprits would face strict punishment after investigation. A high-level committee has been set up to probe the violence, tasked to submit a report within 15 days — though insiders doubt any concrete outcome.
PM Oli’s Dubai Move
Amid mounting unrest and security concerns, sources revealed that PM Oli is preparing to fly to Dubai under the pretext of medical treatment. Himalayan Airlines has reportedly been chosen for his possible escape route.
Protesters Torch Ministers’ Homes
On Monday night, protesters torched the residence of Information Minister Prithvibaba Gurung and former PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Crowds also marched toward former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence, raising fears of further escalation.
The “Gen-Z Revolution”
The ongoing protests, dubbed the “Gen-Z Revolution,” erupted after the government imposed a sweeping ban on 26 social media platforms — including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and LinkedIn — on September 4.
Anger among youth exploded on September 8, transforming into violent nationwide demonstrations against the ban, corruption, and economic crisis. Despite curfew orders, protests continue across Nepal.
Why Were Social Media Platforms Banned?
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had ordered all major social platforms to register with the government by August 28. None complied with the deadline. In response, the Oli government imposed the ban, sparking outrage from citizens, journalists, lawyers, and civil society groups, who called it a “direct assault” on freedom of press and expression.
