According to the United Nations’ new report World Urbanization Prospects 2025, the world’s big cities are constantly changing. Now Jakarta has become the most populous city, where about 42 million people live.

Dhaka can become the biggest city

This UN report, released on November 18, is the first update since 2018. In 2018, Tokyo was the world’s largest city and Jakarta was ranked 33rd. But, now Jakarta has come to number one. Cairo, Egypt is the only non-Asian city in the top 10.

This report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs shows that the rapidly increasing population of cities is a big warning sign for sustainable development in the world. The UN also says that Dhaka could become the world’s largest city by the middle of the century, while Tokyo could fall from third place in 2025 to seventh place by 2050.

Increasing population is becoming a challenge

According to Worldometer data, Indonesia’s current population is 286 million. According to the population of this South-East Asian country, it ranks fourth in the world. In 2019, Indonesia announced that it would shift its capital to Nusantara, a new city under construction. It was a $32 billion project, which was originally planned to start in 2024, but is now likely to be completed in 2028.

Elisa Sutanudjaja, director of the Jakarta-based Rujak Center for Urban Studies, said the report confirms what urban experts already knew — that Greater Jakarta’s population has outnumbered Tokyo’s for years. According to Elisa, Jakarta’s large population presents many big challenges. People of Jakarta face problems like heavy traffic, pollution and floods in everyday life.
