Minorities are being continuously targeted in Bangladesh.

In India’s neighboring country Bangladesh, cases of violence, assault, vandalism and arson against minorities, especially Hindus, are increasing rapidly. Since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina from power in August 2024 and the coming to power of the interim government, the figures so far clearly indicate that instead of becoming normal, the situation is becoming more serious. The Indian government has reacted sharply to this entire incident and said that the continuous attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh are increasing the enmity between the two countries.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs of India, from August 2024 till now Hindus and minorities targeted in Bangladesh More than 2,900 violent incidents have been carried out. These incidents include serious incidents like murder, sexual harassment against women, looting and arson of houses and shops, vandalism of places of worship and arrest and harassment in the name of alleged blasphemy. These figures have been collected by Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council. According to the Council, the nature of violence has also been changing at different times, but pressure and attacks on minorities continue.

Hindus in fear due to 2010 incidents in 17 days

Immediately after the formation of the interim government, i.e. between August 4 and August 20, 2024, the situation looked most dire. A total of 2010 incidents were recorded in this period of just 17 days. During this period, nine people were murdered, while incidents of attacks or vandalism were reported at 69 places of worship. During the same period, four cases of serious sexual violence were registered against women. The most worrying thing is that in 915 cases, houses of minority communities were attacked, looted, set on fire or property was damaged. Experts believe that anti-social elements took advantage of the administrative laxity and political uncertainty that arose after the change of power and targeted the minorities.

Incidents decreased but serious cases increased

After this, a total of 174 incidents were recorded between 21 August and 31 December 2024. The numbers may appear lower than before, but the severity of the violence has increased much more. During this period, 23 people were murdered, nine cases of sexual violence against women were reported and incidents of vandalism, arson or looting were recorded in 64 places of worship. Additionally, in 15 cases people were arrested on alleged blasphemy charges and were accused of being tortured. During this period, homes and businesses of minorities were targeted in 38 cases.

Incidents of violence increased since the beginning of 2025

The beginning of 2025 also did not bring relief for the minorities. A total of 258 incidents were recorded between January 1 and June 30, 2025. During this period, 27 people were murdered, while in 20 cases incidents like rape or gang rape against women were reported. Along with this, 59 places of worship were attacked, in 21 cases there were arrests and harassment in the name of alleged blasphemy and 87 incidents of attacks, looting or arson on homes or businesses were recorded. Human rights organizations say that the weakness of law and order during this period further emboldened the violent elements.

Fear of insecurity among minority communities

The violence continued between July 1 and October 30, 2025, and 181 incidents were recorded during this period. Of these, 18 people were murdered or died under suspicious circumstances. Apart from this, temples or statues were demolished in 28 cases, threats or harassment were made by making allegations of blasphemy in 16 cases and incidents of sexual harassment were reported in 10 cases. Symbolic violence, such as damage to religious sites and statues, deepened the sense of fear and insecurity among minority communities.

The situation remained unusual even in the last months of the year

The situation did not become completely normal even in the last months of the year. Between November 1 and December 28, 2025, for which figures are still being reported, 19 incidents were recorded. These include seven murders, one of which is said to be related to alleged blasphemy. Apart from this, incidents of looting, dacoity or vandalism were reported in five cases.

India’s appeal – Bangladesh should protect minorities

India has appealed to the Bangladesh government to ensure the safety of minorities, take strict action against the culprits and strongly enforce the rule of law. Diplomatic experts say that if there is no concrete improvement in the situation, then this issue can be raised more seriously on international forums. Overall, the data make it clear that violence against minorities in Bangladesh is not an isolated problem, but a deep and persistent challenge. Murder, sexual violence, attacks on religious places and persecution in the name of blasphemy not only raise questions on human rights, but are also becoming a serious threat to the stability and social harmony of the entire region.
