London, August 23, 2025 – A horrific arson attack at an Indian restaurant in East London left five people injured on Friday night, two of them critically. Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of two suspects – a 15-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man – in connection with the attack at the popular Indian Aroma Restaurant on Woodford Avenue, Gants Hill, Ilford.
According to police reports, the fire broke out late on Friday (August 22) while diners were inside the restaurant. Three women and two men were scorched in the blaze, with paramedics rushing them to hospitals after providing urgent treatment at the scene. Two men and one woman remain in critical condition.
CCTV Reveals Masked Attackers
Footage obtained by the PA news agency shows a group of masked individuals entering the restaurant moments before flames erupted. Witnesses recalled hearing screams of diners as the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the premises within seconds.
On social media, CCTV clips circulated showing what appeared to be petrol bombs used in the attack. One video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by user @IG1IG3 captured masked men storming in and the restaurant igniting almost instantly.

Emergency Response
The London Ambulance Service deployed multiple rescue units, including ambulances, an advanced paramedic team, and senior officers.
“We treated five patients with burns and smoke-related injuries. Two were transferred to a major trauma center, while three others were taken to nearby hospitals,” the service said in a statement.
Investigation Underway
The arrested suspects are being held on charges of arson with intent to endanger life. However, police believe at least two other attackers managed to escape before authorities arrived. A manhunt has been launched to identify and capture them.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers of the Met Police’s Central Specialist Crime North Unit stated:
“Although two suspects are in custody, our investigation is progressing rapidly to establish the full circumstances. I understand the community is deeply concerned and shocked by this incident. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”
Community in Shock
The attack has left residents of Ilford and the wider South Asian community shaken. Neighbors described the incident as “terrifying”, with many calling for increased police presence in the area.
Authorities have appealed for witnesses and are reviewing additional CCTV footage to piece together the timeline of events.
