India is preparing to dispatch the third and final consignment of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system to the Philippines, marking the completion of a historic $375 million defense deal between the two nations. The development strengthens India’s emergence as a reliable global defense exporter and bolsters the Philippines’ strategic deterrence in the South China Sea.
A Landmark Defense Partnership
The Philippines became the first country in the world to procure the Indo-Russian jointly developed BrahMos missile system when it signed a $375 million agreement with India in 2022. The landmark deal covered three missile batteries designed to enhance the Philippines’ coastal defense capabilities.
Since then, the delivery process has been unfolding in phases. The first batch reached Manila in 2024, followed by the second in early 2025. Now, with the third and final batch expected soon, the agreement is nearing completion.
Jayatirtha Joshi, CEO and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace, confirmed the readiness of the final shipment. “The rocket is fully ready, and we will deliver it on time,” he said, though he refrained from specifying an exact date for the delivery.

The BrahMos is regarded as one of the most advanced supersonic cruise missiles in the world. With a range of 290 kilometers and speeds of up to Mach 2.8, it is capable of striking enemy targets with precision and devastating impact. For the Philippines, which faces growing maritime security challenges in the South China Sea, the BrahMos represents a critical addition to its arsenal. While the Philippines broke ground as the first international buyer, several other countries are actively pursuing deals with India for BrahMos. Vietnam and Indonesia are currently in advanced negotiations, with reports indicating that Vietnam’s agreement is in its final stages.
Beyond Southeast Asia, nations such as Armenia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Venezuela have expressed interest. India’s ability to deliver high-tech, cost-effective defense systems has positioned it as a serious competitor in the global arms market.
Philippines Eyes More Purchases
Interestingly, the Philippines is not stopping at this first deal. Under its Horizon 3 Military Modernization Program, Manila has shown interest in acquiring additional BrahMos batteries for its land-based coastal defense forces. The success of the first procurement has fueled momentum for a deeper defense partnership with India.
Strategic Significance for India
The BrahMos deal with the Philippines has implications that go beyond trade. It symbolizes India’s growing role as a net security provider in Asia and reflects its strategic push to counterbalance China’s influence in the region. By arming countries facing pressure in the South China Sea, India is both strengthening partnerships and expanding its geopolitical footprint.
Moreover, the successful delivery of the BrahMos to multiple countries could serve as a stepping stone for India’s defense industry, which has set ambitious export targets. In recent years, India has made strides toward becoming self-reliant in defense manufacturing under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
