The Government of India has taken swift action against Austrian leader and economist Gunthir Fahalinger, after his controversial social media post calling for the “breakup of India.” The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology instructed platform X (formerly Twitter) to block his account in India, citing national security concerns.
Fahalinger’s Controversial Post
In his post, Fahalinger reportedly shared a Khalistan map and wrote, “I call for India to end and make EXIndia.” He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being a “Russia man” while appealing for international support for the so-called “freedom of Khalistan.”
The inflammatory remarks sparked outrage among Indian users online, with many calling it a direct attack on India’s sovereignty and unity.
Government’s Strong Response
Following the uproar, Fahalinger’s account was disabled in India. When asked if New Delhi would raise the issue with the Austrian government, a senior Indian official dismissed the matter, saying:
“Why should he be given so much importance? He is a mad person and not in any official position.”
Who is Gunthir Fahalinger?
Gunthir Fahalinger Yahn is the President of the Austrian Committee for NATO Membership of Ukraine, Kosovo, Bosnia, and Austria. He also serves as a board member of the Regional Economic Integration Action Group of South Balkans. Despite these affiliations, he does not hold any official position in Austria’s government.
Historical Context
The controversy comes just a year after Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Austria in July 2024, marking 75 years of India-Austria diplomatic relations. His trip was the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years, strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
The Impact
The Indian government’s strong action sends a clear signal: attempts to promote separatism and challenge India’s territorial integrity will not be tolerated, regardless of the source.
While Fahalinger’s remarks may not carry official weight in Austria, New Delhi’s response highlights its firm stance against Khalistan-linked propaganda and foreign interference in India’s internal matters.
