Neeraj Chopra Leads India’s 19-Member Squad at Tokyo World Athletics Championships 2025

Neeraj Chopra Leads India at Tokyo World Athletics 2025

Tokyo, Sept 1, 2025 — India has announced its 19-member squad for the World Athletics Championships 2025, scheduled to be held in Tokyo from September 13 to 21. Javelin star Neeraj Chopra will lead the team, marking yet another historic moment for Indian athletics.

Historic Javelin Representation

For the first time in India’s history, four male javelin throwers — Neeraj Chopra, Sachin Yadav, Bodhir Singh, and Rohit Yadav — will participate in the championships. In the previous edition, four Indian athletes had qualified, but Rohit Yadav could not compete due to injury.

Women Athletes and Selection Details

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) selected five women athletes for the senior team after a rigorous selection committee meeting. Unlike the 2023 Budapest Championships, where Indian relay teams participated, no Indian relay team qualified this time.

Medal Prospects and Challenges

Neeraj Chopra, who won gold in Budapest 2023, remains India’s best medal hope, as other athletes face steep competition. Despite qualifying through world rankings, 20 km race walker Akshdeep Leo was left out due to fitness concerns. Asian champion heptathlete Nandini Agasara is still recovering from an elbow injury, and 3000m steeplechase star Avinash Sabale will miss the tournament after ACL surgery in July.

Looking Ahead

India’s squad reflects a blend of experience and emerging talent, with Chopra spearheading the mission. While medal expectations rest largely on him, participation itself marks India’s growing presence on the world athletics stage.
