IMD Alert: Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms in 15 States Within 12 Hours

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next 12 hours, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across 15 states. The rapidly changing weather could bring sudden downpours, strong winds, and lightning strikes in several districts.

According to IMD, the affected states include Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Assam.

⚠️ Heavy Rainfall Alerts:

  • Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand – Torrential rains expected between 30 Aug – 2 Sept, with risk of landslides and flooding.

  • Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Maharashtra (including Marathwada) – Continuous downpours likely for the next 7 days.

  • Rajasthan – Heavy rainfall in western parts (Aug 31–Sept 1) and eastern regions (Sept 1–2).

  • Karnataka & Kerala (coastal regions) – Widespread heavy rainfall forecast till early September.

  • Central India (Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha) – Strong rains between Aug 31 – Sept 3.

  • Eastern States (Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim) – Heavy spells of rain between Aug 30 – Sept 2.

  • Northeast (Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura) – Heavy to very heavy rainfall expected till Sept 4, with thunderstorms and lightning.

🌪️ Thunderstorm & Lightning Warning:

Thunderstorms with lightning are expected over Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand for the next 5 days. IMD has advised extreme caution in hilly and flood-prone areas.

🛑 Advisory:

The IMD has urged people to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel in hilly terrains.

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms.

  • Keep away from open fields and tall trees during lightning.

  • Follow state disaster management guidelines.

With over 20 states facing heavy rainfall alerts, the IMD has warned that the risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging remains high. Travelers and residents are advised to remain alert and prepared.
