The prisoners who escaped from jail during the mass movement in Bangladesh in 2024 and the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government are still roaming freely. According to the news published in the prestigious daily Banik Barta, out of 2,232 prisoners who escaped from different jails of the country, 713 prisoners are still out of the grip of the law. These include a large number of vicious and high-risk criminals, due to which serious apprehensions have arisen regarding the safety of the common people.

According to the news, before and after the fall of the government, prisoners had created a huge ruckus in 17 jails of the country. The situation became so out of control that all the prisoners escaped from Narsindi, Sherpur and Satkhira jails. This is considered to be one of the biggest incidents in the jail history of the country.

How many prisoners escaped from where?

The figures are shocking. 826 prisoners escaped from Narsindi jail, 500 prisoners from Sherpur jail, 600 prisoners from Satkhira jail, 105 prisoners from Kushtia jail, 200 dangerous prisoners escaped from Kashimpur high-security jail. Apart from this, Jamalpur jail suffered heavy damage, although there is no news of any prisoner escaping from there.

1519 returned, 713 still absconding

Despite government efforts and campaigns, so far only 1,519 prisoners have been re-arrested and sent to jail. The remaining 713 prisoners are still absconding. According to the jail department, there are many notorious criminals among them, whose roaming free is a big threat to the society.

Looted weapons become new concern

The most serious aspect is that the weapons looted from jails have not been fully recovered yet. These include Chinese rifles and shotguns. Experts believe that criminals absconding with weapons can carry out organized crime, robbery and violent activities.

The jail department has appealed to the law-enforcement agencies to take strict action against the absconding prisoners. At the same time, security experts say that if concrete steps are not taken soon, it will have a direct impact on the law and order of the country and the safety of common citizens.
