Colombo / Jaffna:
Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumar Disanayake intensified regional tensions by making an unexpected visit to the disputed Kachchathivu Island on September 1. Initially arriving in Jaffna to inaugurate local development projects, the President suddenly planned a trip to the island, long at the center of disputes between India and Sri Lanka.
The island’s status has repeatedly stirred political debates, with actor-turned-politician Vijay previously raising concerns, calling for India to reclaim the territory. The recent visit has reignited discussions over sovereignty and fishing rights.
Historical Context
1974 Agreement:
Under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, India recognized Kachchathivu as part of Sri Lanka. However, Indian fishermen were granted permission to fish, dry nets, and participate in the St. Anthony Church celebrations on the island.
1976 Agreement:
Fishing across each other’s maritime boundaries was prohibited, creating new challenges for Indian fishermen.
Current Situation
Indian fishermen frequently face arrests and seizures by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the maritime border. According to reports, 535 Indian fishermen were arrested in 2024, highlighting the ongoing tension and economic impact on coastal communities.
The surprise visit by President Disanayake, captured by Sri Lankan journalist Ajjam Amin, shows him sitting in a boat with naval soldiers, signaling a strong political statement. This visit comes amid ongoing friction over fishing rights and maritime boundaries, further complicating India-Sri Lanka relations.
Global & Regional Impact
The island dispute, though small in size, has significant implications for regional diplomacy, fishermen livelihoods, and bilateral relations. President Disanayake’s actions could escalate political debate and influence upcoming negotiations between India and Sri Lanka regarding territorial rights and maritime activities.
