The International Crimes Tribunal Court of Bangladesh has sentenced the country’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death on Monday. Sheikh Hasina was found guilty on 3 out of 5 charges. Sheikh Hasina is not the first Prime Minister of the world who has been sentenced to death. Even before this, many countries have sentenced the top leadership to death.
The court has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for anti-humanity crimes committed during last year’s July insurgency. The court sentenced him after finding him guilty of instigating murder and ordering murder.
Former President Pervez Musharraf
Pervez Musharraf was the President of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008. He was charged in 2019 in a treason case in which he was accused of suspending the Constitution in 2007. The death sentence was passed in absentia. This punishment was canceled in 2020. However, Pervez Musharraf died in exile in Dubai in the year 2023.
georgios papadopoulos
Georgios Papadopoulos was the President of Greece. This military dictator who led the coup of 1967 was deposed in 1973. He was sentenced to death in 1975 after a trial on charges of treason and rebellion. Later the sentence was changed to life imprisonment and he died in jail in 1999.
Chun Doo-hwan- President of South Korea (19801988)
Chun Doo-hwan was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1979 military coup and the 1980 Guangzhou massacre. Later his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment and he was pardoned in 1997. He died in 2021.
Saddam Hussein- President of Iraq (19792003)
Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death in 2006 for crimes against humanity in the killing of 148 Shia Muslims in Dujail in 1982. On December 30, 2006, he was punished by hanging.
Mohammad Najibullah- President of Afghanistan (19871992)
Mohammad Najibullah was sentenced to death in absentia by the Taliban in 1996. After the Taliban captured Kabul, he was captured from the UN compound, tortured and publicly hanged in September 1996.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto- PM and President of Pakistan (19711977)
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was ousted in a military coup in 1977. After this, he was convicted of conspiring to murder a political opponent and sentenced to death. Despite international appeals, he was hanged in April 1979.
Amir-Abbas Hoveyda- Prime Minister of Iran (19651977)
After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, he was arrested and sentenced to death on charges of “waging war against God” and corruption. He was hanged by firing squad in April 1979.
