Bridge suddenly collapsed in China

A newly inaugurated Hongchi Bridge in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan suddenly collapsed. The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a massive landslide engulfed a portion of the bridge. A large part of the bridge fell into the river and within no time a cloud of dust and debris filled the air.

The video of this accident quickly went viral on social media platform X. It can be clearly seen in the video how a huge landslide falls on the lower part of the bridge and within a few seconds the pillars of the bridge sink into the river. This bridge was approximately 758 meters long and was a part of the national highway connecting central China to Tibet.

According to Reuters report, local authorities closed the bridge on Monday afternoon after cracks and ground movements were observed in nearby hills and roads. Although the administration had stopped the traffic as a precautionary measure, the situation suddenly worsened on Tuesday and a massive landslide destroyed part of the bridge.

Local administration started investigation

People gave different types of reactions to this. Some people said that instead of boasting about the speed of construction, attention should be paid to quality. So someone said that it did not seem to be entirely the fault of the bridge but the landslide was more serious. Initial reports say that the main cause of the accident is geological instability. This area falls in a hilly and landslide-prone area, where development work has always been challenging. Local officials said a technical investigation into the accident has been initiated to determine whether any design or construction flaw was responsible.
