‘Trump’s Tariff Arbitrary’: Chinese Envoy Urges India to Resist Trade War

New Delhi, Sept 9, 2025 – In a sharp reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, Chinese Ambassador to India Shoo Faihong has called the move “inappropriate and incompatible,” urging India to oppose any form of tariff and trade war.

Speaking to the media, Faihong stressed that the two major Asian economies—India and China—must stand together to safeguard the multilateral trade system and protect the interests of developing nations.

Tariffs and Trade War Stance

The ambassador said:

“History cannot be changed, but we can change the future. We should support a fair, well-organized multipolar world and a global economic system beneficial to all. Any tariff or trade war must be opposed to protect the shared interests of developing countries.”

He accused Washington of weaponizing tariffs, pointing out that the U.S., after decades of enjoying the benefits of free trade, is now trying to shift costs onto other economies.

India-China Cooperation and Global Role

Addressing bilateral relations, Shoo Faihong underlined that the world is at a crossroads:
👉 “Peace vs war, dialogue vs conflict, cooperation vs competition.”

He urged India and China to demonstrate “global vision and responsibility” by contributing to peace, inclusive growth, and reforms in the global governance system.

Trade Ties on the Rise

Faihong highlighted that India-China trade reached $88 billion in the first seven months of 2025, marking a 10.5% increase from last year. He reaffirmed Beijing’s willingness to align development strategies with India and share its modernization experiences.

Visa and Cultural Exchange

On people-to-people ties, the envoy revealed that China has issued over 240,000 visas to Indian citizens this year.

✅ China has reopened pilgrimages for Indians to Tibet’s Kailash Mansarovar (Congress) and Jasham Yuko.
✅ India, in turn, has resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese travelers.

Big Picture

The remarks reflect Beijing’s strategy of building stronger ties with New Delhi at a time when India is facing tariff pressure from Washington. Analysts say the statement is an attempt to position India and China as joint defenders of multilateralism in an era of shifting global trade dynamics.
