Fierce Earthquake Jolts Bhutan: Tremors of 4.2 Magnitude, Panic Among Citizens

Bhutan earthquake today

Thimphu/Kathmandu, Sept 8, 2025 – A strong earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck Bhutan, India’s neighboring country, on Monday morning, sending residents running out of their homes in panic. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 km, increasing the risk of aftershocks.

The tremors were recorded at 11:15 AM, with the epicenter located at 26.89°N latitude and 91.71°E longitude in Bhutan. While no immediate casualties or damage have been reported, authorities have warned citizens to remain alert.

Bhutan’s High Seismic Risk

Situated in the fragile ranges of the Himalayas, Bhutan falls under seismic zones IV and V, considered the most earthquake-prone categories. Multiple active fault lines run through the region, making it highly vulnerable to moderate and strong earthquakes.

Recent Earthquake Activity in the Region

This quake comes barely a day after China recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, also at a shallow depth of 10 km. Experts warn that low-depth quakes like these can cause more surface-level destruction compared to deeper ones.

Rising Natural Hazards in Bhutan

In addition to frequent quakes, Bhutan faces multiple natural hazards, including:

  • Floods and flash floods from glacial lakes

  • Landslides and strong winds

  • Wildfires and storms linked to climate change

Bhutan’s past disasters, such as the 2011 and 2013 storms, caused widespread devastation in rural areas, raising concerns over preparedness.

Government Response and Public Advisory

The Bhutanese government has urged citizens to stay cautious and follow safety guidelines. Rescue teams have been put on alert in anticipation of possible aftershocks. Experts recommend adopting earthquake-resistant construction techniques and ensuring that families remain in safe, open spaces until further updates are issued.
