Attack on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house.
Heavy deployment of army and police has been made outside Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at 32 Dhanmondi in Dhaka. The student protesters opposing Sheikh Hasina are demanding complete demolition of the building and they claim that they want to build a football field at that place. There were clashes with the security forces throughout the day and even at night they kept pelting stones from the dark corners of the area.
On Monday morning, a Bangladesh court sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. It ended a months-long trial in which he was found guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on last year’s student-led rebellion.
Attempt to destroy Sheikh Mujibur’s house
In fact, security agencies in Bangladesh resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters who were trying to demolish the house of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s father and country’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the capital Dhaka on Monday. Ramna Division Police Deputy Commissioner Masood Alam said that several loud grenades were used to disperse the protesters. Many protesters and security personnel were injured during lathi charge and throwing of bricks and stones.
Sheikh Mujibur was killed in a military coup
Mujibur Rahman, fondly called Bangabandhu, was killed in a military coup on 15 August 1975. Most of his family members were also killed in that incident, including his 10-year-old youngest son Sheikh Russell. A large part of Rehman’s private residence was demolished after the Awami League government of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power last year. It was converted into a museum.
Hundreds of protesters died
Ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal on Monday for crimes against humanity committed during mass protests against her government in July last year. In its verdict after a months-long trial, Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) described the Awami League leader as the mastermind and key architect of the violent crackdown that left hundreds of protesters dead.
Lathi charged on protesters
Even before the verdict was announced, a large group of protesters tried to take two digging machines towards Dhanmondi 32, where Rehman’s house is. The security personnel stopped them and used batons to disperse the protesters. Some protesters gathered again near Square Hospital on Panthapath, where law enforcers fired several rounds of tear gas shells.
use of sticks and grenades
Traffic was suspended on Mirpur Road and surrounding areas in Dhaka and most of the shops in the neighborhood were closed. At 2:45 pm, the law enforcement officers retreated under heavy pressure from the protesters. After a few minutes, the army, police and RAB started using batons and grenades, regaining complete control of the area. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhanmondi Division Jisanul Haq said that we will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands under any circumstances.
