US President Donald Trump has once again taken such a decision, which makes it clear that his government is now looking at the benefits of its own country first instead of working together with the countries of the world. In fact, America has decided to distance itself from a total of 66 international organizations, including the International Solar Alliance (ISA), which was started on the initiative of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France.

This decision has come at a time when the whole world is struggling with challenges related to climate change and environment. In such a situation, America’s exit from these institutions is being considered a big blow to global cooperation. Let us know why America decided to get out of it?

What is International Solar Alliance?

International Solar Alliance was started in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the then French President François Hollande. Its objective is to promote solar energy worldwide and to provide cheap and clean energy to developing countries. Today more than 120 countries are members of this organization. America was also a part of it till now but the Trump administration has decided to exit it.

Why did America decide to withdraw from these institutions?

In a statement issued by the White House, it was said that President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum, under which America will withdraw from 66 international organizations. These include 35 non-UN organizations and 31 United Nations (UN) related agencies. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the administration’s review of these institutions found that they are more expensive than necessary, are not being operated properly, and are working against America’s sovereignty and interests. And some organizations are placing excessive emphasis on issues like climate, migration and diversity. The White House statement said that America will now invest money only on those global platforms where American interests are directly served.

Distance kept from climate agreements also

With this decision, America has also separated itself from UNFCCC (United Nations Climate Change Framework Convention). This treaty later became the foundation of the Paris Climate Agreement. Trump has already called climate change a hoax and had pulled out of the Paris Agreement in his first term. Environmental experts and scientists have strongly criticized this decision. He says that without a big polluting country like America, it will be difficult to deal with the climate crisis. This may also give other countries an excuse to go back on their promises.
