Trump on PM Modi: ‘America Cannot Ignore India’; Calls Modi a Friend but Raises Concerns

Trump’s Big Statement on India and PM Modi

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again spoken about India–U.S. relations, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “friend” and describing India as a special partner for America.

While praising Modi’s leadership and the strength of bilateral ties, Trump also added a note of caution, saying:

“I will always be a friend of Modi. He is a great Prime Minister. But I do not like what he is doing at this time.”

His remarks appeared to point towards India’s close engagement with China and its continued purchase of Russian oil and defense equipment.

PM Modi Responds

Prime Minister Modi responded through a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing appreciation for Trump’s positive words on Indo-U.S. relations. He described the partnership between the two nations as a comprehensive and visionary strategic alliance, emphasizing that India values its relationship with Washington.

Experts Weigh In

Strategic affairs expert Wiles Topp, commenting on Trump’s remarks, said:

  • “America cannot ignore India.”

  • The large Indian diaspora in the U.S. plays a vital role in America’s economy, trade, and politics.

  • Positive remarks from a U.S. President are not just signals to the Indian government, but also to overseas Indians.

He also noted that Trump, being a businessman at heart, looks at trade relations from a deal-making perspective, which could open opportunities for Indian companies to export to the U.S. without unnecessary tariffs.

A Word of Caution

However, experts also warned that despite the praise, India should remain cautious. During his presidency, Trump imposed executive orders on tariffs and imports concerning India—decisions that were not easily reversible.

Analysts believe that while the strategic partnership remains strong, New Delhi must ensure that business and trade talks with Washington remain balanced and beneficial.

India–U.S. Relations: A Special Partnership

Despite occasional differences over tariffs, oil imports, and defense deals, Trump reaffirmed the strength of Indo-U.S. ties:

“There is a special relationship between India and America. There is nothing to worry about in this. Sometimes such moments come.”

The statement reflects the reality that while challenges persist, the India–U.S. partnership remains a cornerstone of global strategic and economic affairs.
