On Wednesday, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a woman driving a car in America’s Minneapolis city, killing her on the spot. The woman has been identified as Renee Good (37). After the incident, tension spread in the area and hundreds of people took to the streets to protest against ICE.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says the woman tried to hit the officers with her car, after which the agent opened fire in self-defense. President Donald Trump defended the ICE agent, saying that the video that surfaced is extremely scary and that the woman deliberately targeted the officer. However, this is not the first time. According to reports, incidents of shootings involving immigration agents have increased continuously during the Trump administration, which has intensified the debate regarding immigration policy and use of force in America.
Major operation in Minneapolis
DHS reported that a large immigration operation was being run in Minneapolis with about 2,000 agents. This action is said to be related to allegations of fraud against some people of the Somali community. Democratic MP Ilhan Omar said that the killed woman was a legal observer of ICE activities.
Who was Renee Nicole Good?
Renee Nicole Good was a resident of Minneapolis (Minnesota, USA). She was a family woman and was extremely dedicated to her family. They had three children, including a six-year-old son. At the time of the incident, she was present with her family in the area of ICE immigration raid. It was seen in the video of the incident that when Renee was shot, her husband was screaming and saying, she is my wife.
Renee’s family and especially her mother Donna Good said that Renee was very kind, sensitive and caring for others. On the day of the incident, Renee was asked by ICE agents to get out of the car. According to reports, he delayed getting out of the car, after which the agents shot him three times in the face, killing him on the spot.
Increasing violence in immigration action
According to data from The Trace, a non-profit newsroom working on gun violence, there have been 14 shooting incidents so far under the Trump administration’s strict immigration policy. A total of 28 incidents were recorded as of January 7, in which agents either opened fire or stopped people at gunpoint. The report warns that the actual figures could be even higher, as many incidents are not made public.
According to the report, apart from firing, less lethal weapons like rubber bullets and paper balls have also been used. 13 such incidents have been recorded, 10 of which occurred during protests. Among them, two pastors in California and Illinois who were praying during the demonstration were also injured.
The figures of detention and deaths are worrying
During Trump’s second term, the number of people held in ICE detention centers has increased by nearly 50%. Currently more than 65,000 people are in custody. In 2025, 32 people have died in ICE custody, which is the highest in the last 20 years. Human rights organizations say that the reasons for this are overcrowding, poor conditions, lack of treatment, mental stress and increasing violence.
