This is a battle for influence and resources between two superpowers. The reason is not just an attack, but the oil and strategic interests hidden behind it. Venezuela is among the countries with the largest oil reserves in the world and China is considered its biggest oil buyer. This can become an important reason for conflict between China and America.

China is Venezuela’s biggest oil buyer

Venezuela is the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. It has about 303 billion barrels of oil, which is more than the combined reserves of Saudi Arabia and America. China buys about 76-80% of Venezuela’s oil exports. In November 2025, China bought 613,000 barrels of crude oil from Venezuela every day.

Venezuela’s heavy crude oil is very useful for Chinese refineries and is available at cheap prices. Venezuela owes China about $60 billion in debt, which is related to loans given in previous years. This loan is being repaid in exchange for oil, so the stability of Venezuela is very important for China.

Does China have a presence around Venezuela?

China does not have any official or permanent naval base in Venezuela. Till now, China’s only foreign military base is in Djibouti (Africa). However, China has deployed its hospital ship Silk Road Arc in the Caribbean region, which is part of the Harmony 2025 mission. This ship is visiting Nicaragua, Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados and other countries. Although it is in the name of medical mission, it is a demonstration of China’s naval capability.

On the other hand, from August 2025, America has made its largest military deployment around Venezuela. The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, arrived in the Caribbean Sea along with three destroyers and more than 5,500 troops. By October 28, the number of US troops in the southern Caribbean and Puerto Rico reached 10,000.

Jinping’s special envoy meets Maduro

Venezuelan President Nicolas maduro On Friday, met President Xi Jinping’s special envoy Qi Xiaochi in the capital Caracas. This meeting took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan Miraflores Palace. A few hours after this meeting, US President Donald Trump claimed that Maduro had been captured. Maduro appointed China’s special envoy Qi Xiaochi to handle Latin America affairs. Maduro had said that the talks were good and both the countries agreed to further strengthen their relations.
