What is delta force?

Delta Force, whose official name is Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (SFOD-D). This is considered to be the most elite and secret special operations unit of the American Army. Its main task is to conduct anti-terrorism operations, capture or eliminate high-value targets, and rescue hostages. To put it simply, it is America’s foremost force. This is the same Delta Force, which had killed Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, the leader of the world’s dreaded terrorist organization Islamic State.

When and why was Delta Force formed?

Delta Force was founded in the late 1970s by famed Green Beret officer Charlie Beckwith. During that period, terrorist incidents were increasing across the world. This unit was prepared on the lines of Britain’s famous SAS (Special Air Service), so that America too could have a force that could conduct highly confidential, fast and deadly operations.

What is its structure like?

Delta Force is divided into four Saber Squadrons (A, B, C and D). There are three types of teams in every squadron. Two assault troops, one sniper/recon team. That means specialists are ready for every mission. It is considered almost impossible to join Delta Force. The selection process is called Assessment & Selection (A&S). It takes place in the mountains of West Virginia, candidates have to cover long distances with heavy weights. The final test is a 40-mile timed ruck march, that too over rugged hills. Only a few people out of thousands are able to accomplish this.

After selection, Operator Training Course (OTC) starts, which lasts for about 6 months. There is special emphasis on close quarter combat (fight inside the room), hostage rescue training, surgical strikes and covert operations. Many times only 1 or 2 people are able to pass from a batch.

Delta Force has been involved in almost every major military operation of America in the last 50 years.
