Pakistan was shaken by earthquake on Friday morning. In the morning people’s eyes opened with terror. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 5.2 on the Richter scale. Tremors were felt in North Pakistan. The tremors were felt around 3:09 am (2:39 am local time), causing tremors in many northern areas of the country. According to NCS the earthquake was at a depth of 135 kilometers.

According to NCS, the epicenter of the earthquake is the hilly area located near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, earthquake tremors are often felt in this area. Although the intensity of the earthquake was moderate, the depth at which it occurred indicates that damage on the surface may be limited. Seismologists say that earthquakes that occur at depth lose more energy before reaching the surface, while earthquakes with shallow depth cause stronger tremors to be felt on the ground. However, no information about any damage has been revealed yet.

Why do more earthquakes occur?

Pakistan is located on one of the world’s most active seismic belts, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide.

Several provinces—such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan—lie directly on the plate boundary. Moderate to strong tremors are often felt in these areas. Sindh and Punjab, which lie near the edge of the Indian Plate, are also at seismic risk, although tremors are less frequent there.

Dangerous earthquakes occur in Balochistan

Balochistan, which straddles the boundary of the Arabian and Eurasian plates, remains one of the most earthquake-sensitive regions of the country. Khyber region and Gilgit-Baltistan have also faced devastating earthquakes several times.
