Death sentence on Sheikh Hasina, China raised its hands, said- this is Bangladesh’s domestic issue

Sheikh Hasina and Xi Jinping

There has been an increase at the international level after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in the Crimes Against Humanity case. Meanwhile, China clearly said on Tuesday that this is an internal matter of Bangladesh and it will not make any additional comment on it. The United Nations has expressed concern over the decision and has opposed the death penalty.

During a media briefing in Beijing, when Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was asked a question on the death sentence awarded to Sheikh Hasina, she replied bluntly – This is an internal matter of Bangladesh.

What else did China say?

Along with this, he said that China wants unity, stability and development to be maintained in Bangladesh. He also reiterated that China will continue to pursue the policy of friendship and neighborly cooperation with all the people of Bangladesh. This reaction of China has come at a time when the political environment of Bangladesh is extremely unstable and the decision has sparked a new debate at the global level.

What is the whole matter?

A tribunal court in Dhaka on Monday sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death. The court found him guilty of crimes against humanity during the 2024 student movement. The important thing is that Hasina was tried in absentia, because after being ousted from power, she had come to India and has been living here since then.

Those sentenced include Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both of whom have been sentenced to death. Also convicted is former police chief Chaudhary Abdullah Almamun, who has been sentenced to 5 years. He got this concession because he confessed to the crime and cooperated in the investigation.

UN said- death penalty is regrettable

The United Nations gave a mixed reaction to Sheikh Hasina’s hanging order. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that this is an important moment of decisions, but the UN’s position on the death penalty remains the same – we are against the death penalty in all circumstances. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk also reiterated the same stance.
