Al Mamun, Sheikh Hasina and Waqar-Uz Zaman
International Tribunal Court (ICT) of Bangladesh former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Has been sentenced to death. The court has found Hasina guilty of the July rebellion. In July 2024, Bangladeshi students revolted against Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka and the police opened fire to suppress this revolt. 1400 people were killed in this firing incident.
Two people close to Sheikh Hasina played an important role in sending Sheikh Hasina to death sentence. It is being said that if these two close relatives were not in Bangladesh, the prosecution would have struggled to collect evidence against Sheikh Hasina.
Who are the two people who betrayed Sheikh Hasina?
1. Waqar Uz Zaman- Presently he is the Army Chief of Bangladesh. Sheikh is also considered a relative of Haseen. In June 2024, he was appointed the Army Chief of Bangladesh, but it was he who betrayed Hasina.
According to the former Home Minister of Bangladesh, Waqar Uz Zaman had joined America. It was on his instructions that the miscreants were not controlled. Only when things got out of hand, Waqar informed Sheikh Hasina.
Sheikh Hasina submitted her resignation only on Waqar’s request. Waqar told Hasina that she can come back as soon as the matter calms down, but as soon as Hasina left, Waqar started the process of forming an interim government.
2. Al Mamun- He has held the post of former Inspector General of Police of Bangladesh. He was also named along with Sheikh Hasina in the charges of July rebellion, but Mamun became a government witness during the trial. Mamun gave high level testimony in the entire case. Mamun mentioned those things in front of the court, which were a topic of discussion only in Bangladesh.
As soon as Mamun spoke about the government’s testimony, an audio went viral in Bangladesh. In this audio, Sheikh Hasina is asking the police chief to open fire on the rebels. Al Mamun has got the advantage of becoming a government witness.
Bangladesh court has sentenced Al Mamun to 5 years imprisonment. Al Mamun has been in jail for the last 17 months.
Big question- What will happen next for Sheikh Hasina?
The government of Bangladesh will get a warrant issued for Sheikh Hasina through Interpol. After this, this warrant will be handed over to the Government of India. After this, it will depend on India what decision it takes regarding Sheikh Hasina. However, general elections are to be held in Bangladesh after 6 months. The largest party there, BNP, has talked about showing leniency in Sheikh Hasina’s case.
BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul says that we will not do politics of revenge. Sheikh Hasina’s cases will be withdrawn when she comes to government. However, BNP has not given clarity as to what kind of cases will be withdrawn.
