Mexico City Public Safety Secretary Pablo Vazquez said in a press conference that 100 police officers were injured, 40 of whom were hospitalized.

He told local media outlet Milenio that 20 civilians were also injured. The Public Safety Secretary also said that 20 people were arrested and another 20 were referred for administrative offenses.

Why are people protesting?

Gen-Ji is accusing President Claudia Sheinbaum of colluding with a drug cartel. Claudia Sheinbaum is known for taking action against American policies. She also stood in support of Venezuela. She was famous across the world for speaking openly against President Trump. Now President Claudia’s government is in danger due to Gen-Ji’s massive protests.

According to Mexican news outlet El Universal, as protesters were entering the grounds of the National Palace, security forces fired tear gas and threw stones. With their shields and stones, they (security forces) attacked the youth demonstrating in the Zócalo, some of whom were injured and were helped by doctors and ERUM (Emergency Rescue and Medical Emergency Squadron), who were also marching themselves, El Universal reported.

Sheinbaum, in power through October 2024, has maintained more than 70 percent popularity in her first year, but her security policy has come under criticism in the wake of several high-profile killings, including that of Carlos Manzo.
