China has discovered huge gold reserves in the Kunlun mountains of Xinjiang. According to initial estimates, the total gold reserves in this area could be more than 1,000 tonnes. This is the third major gold discovery in China in the last one year. Earlier, more than 1,000 tons of gold mines were also found in Liaoning and Hunan provinces. Geologists have identified 87 gold deposits in Kunlun, of which 6 are important. The gold layers in the upper 300 meters are mineable.
Before this discovery, the world’s largest known gold mines were usually limited to just a few hundred tons of gold. Experts estimated that only 3,000 tonnes of gold is unmined in China, which is only a quarter of that of Russia and Australia. But recent discoveries suggest that China’s gold reserves may be greater than previously thought.
China has 3 times more gold than India
China has more gold reserves than India. China’s total gold reserve as of October 8, 2025 is 2,279.56 tonnes, while the Reserve Bank of India has 876.18 tonnes of gold as of March 2025. Gold accounts for only 5% of China’s total foreign exchange reserves, whereas in India it is 9.3%. China is at 5th place in the world in this matter, while India is at 7th place.
In India too, there are gold mines in Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, but huge mines like China’s and discovered with modern technology have not been found yet.
What is the reason for finding gold reserves?
The reason for finding gold reserves in China is the increase in exploration expenses and use of high-tech technology. Chinese geologists are using artificial intelligence, powerful ground-penetrating radar and sensitive satellites. The impact of these technologies has been seen outside China also. New gold mines have been discovered in many African areas.
China built a giant cross-shaped antenna system in 2018. This made it possible to identify gold and other minerals in the deep layers of the earth. This technology has also been successful in the discovery of lithium, uranium, rare metals, oil and natural gas. This discovery has strengthened China’s global mineral supply.
Mineral reserves in Xinjiang province
Kunlun Mountain was considered sacred in ancient China. According to the old text The Classic of Mountains and Seas, Kunlun was considered the center of the world and the storehouse of all treasures. Xinjiang is rich in gold and other minerals.
