Why is it called Eid al-Ittihad?
The question arises why the country’s national day is called Eid al-Ittihad. Actually, the word Eid al-Ittihad means Festival of the Union in Arabic. It emphasizes union/unity—which is the core of the UAE’s national identity. This name symbolizes the country’s enduring heritage, values of strength and pride.
Eid Al Ittihad is officially celebrated on 2 December every year. It commemorates that historic day in 1971 when 7 emirates united to form the United Arab Emirates. In 2024, the UAE’s National Day celebrations were officially renamed Eid Al Ittihad.
