Strict rules have been imposed on alcohol in Thailand. Under the new amended law, a fine of 10,000 baht (approximately Rs 26,591) or more can be imposed for drinking, serving or buying alcohol between 2 pm and 5 pm. This rule further tightens the old time restriction that came into effect in 1972. It has been implemented from 8th November itself.

This decision has been taken under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act. There are some exceptions to this also. Licensed entertainment venues, hotels, airports and tourism sector establishments can still serve alcohol. Under the new rules, promotion or advertisement of liquor is limited to factual information only. Celebrities, influencers or any famous person will not be allowed to promote liquor.

What difficulties will the new rules cause?

Chanon Koetcharoen, president of the Restaurant Association of Thailand, says the new rules will create difficulties for the restaurant industry. For example, if a customer buys a beer at 1:59 pm and drinks it until 2:05 pm, this would be considered a violation and could result in a fine. In this way, there is a possibility of reduced sales and impact on the restaurant industry.

Khao San Road in Bangkok is known as the backpackers hub. Many bars and restaurants here serve alcohol from 11 pm to 2 pm. Sales are officially controlled, but customers often demand alcohol even during restricted hours.

Opposition MP protested

Opposition People’s Party MP Taophiphop Limjitrakorn says liquor should be sold 24 hours a day. He believes that the purpose of the new law is to meet the needs of those who are against alcohol.

The new rules may create confusion for foreign tourists. They can order alcohol before the restricted time, but may violate the law when drinking afterward. In such a situation, to avoid fine, both the customer and the restaurant will need to be alert.
