Once again there is talk of finding a gold mine in Pakistan. This time it is being said that this mine will be found in Tarbela Dam. It is being said that gold worth $636 billion is hidden in the Tarbela Dam, which needs to be extracted immediately. A round of meetings has also started between the army and the government regarding this.

According to BBC Urdu, Hanif Gauhar, former senior vice president of Pakistan Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has claimed for the first time that there is a gold mine in Tarbela. Hanif Gauhar says that this information has been found in the samples taken from there. After Gauhar’s statement, a meeting was held within the army regarding this.

Where is Tarbela Dam located in Pakistan?

This dam has been constructed on the Sindh River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This dam is the world’s largest made of earth. Electricity is produced through this dam. This dam was constructed between 1968 and 1976. According to the World Bank, Pakistan’s Tarbela Dam supplies 16% of the electricity to the entire country.

In such a situation, the manner in which it has been claimed that there are gold mines under this dam has given rise to many questions. Because earlier also there has been talk of finding gold mines in Pakistan, but till now Pakistan has not been able to find gold in abundant quantity anywhere.

When were the claims made regarding gold in Pakistan?

1. In January 2025, the Mineral Minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province had made a big claim regarding the gold mine. Mineral Minister Sher Ali Gorchani said that gold worth about 700 billion Pakistani rupees is present in Attock district. However, till now the Government of Pakistan has not taken any decision regarding this.

2. In 2015, it was reported that a gold mine was found in Chiniot province, but later it was revealed that there is iron ore here. The government then made a deal with a Chinese company to extract iron. So far 4 tonnes of iron has been extracted here, but not even a single particle of gold has been found here.

3. In 2021, local people started digging on the banks of Indus river in Attock area. Later it came to light that these people were digging for gold. The government immediately initiated Section 144 action in the entire area. Later, when samples were taken from this area, nothing was found.
