Trump Picks Sergio Gor as Youngest US Ambassador to India, Despite Musk’s ‘Snake’ Remark

New Delhi/Washington, August 22, 2025 – US President Donald Trump on Friday announced the appointment of Sergio Gor, Principal of the White House and a long-time ally, as the next US Ambassador to India. At 39, Gor will be the youngest US envoy ever posted to New Delhi, succeeding Democratic leader Eric Garcetti, who returned to California after the Biden administration.

Trump praised Gor in a post on X, writing, “For the most populous region of the world, I need someone I can fully trust. Sergio has been a close friend for many years and will prove to be a brilliant ambassador.”

Political Journey and Rise in Trump’s Circle

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Gor migrated to the United States with his family at the age of 12 in 1999. He studied at George Washington University and was active in Republican politics from his student days, working with far-right politicians such as Steve King and Michelle Bachmann. Later, he served as deputy chief of staff for Senator Rand Paul.

Gor rose rapidly within Trump’s orbit after joining his 2020 presidential campaign. Following Trump’s 2024 election victory, he became the Director of the Presidential Personal Office, overseeing the induction of thousands of “America First” loyalists into federal roles.

Elon Musk’s Criticism

Despite his growing influence, Gor has also faced controversy. In June 2025, Tesla CEO Elon Musk called him a “snake” in a social media post, after reports alleged Gor had failed to complete documentation for his permanent security clearance while overseeing staff background checks at the White House.

No Direct Links to India

Unlike his predecessor Garcetti, who had cultivated ties with India during the Biden era, Gor has had little direct connection with the country. His father, Yuri Gorokhowski, was an aviation engineer in the Soviet Union, while his mother is of Israeli origin.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gor will not only serve as the US Ambassador to India but also as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, covering key nations such as Pakistan and Bangladesh where the US currently lacks full-time ambassadors.

What It Means for India-US Relations

Experts believe Gor’s appointment signals Trump’s intent to strengthen his personal influence in India during his second term. While critics question his inexperience in South Asia, supporters argue his closeness to Trump ensures direct access to the White House, which could expedite bilateral decision-making.
