At least 80 people, including civilians and soldiers, have died in a major US military attack in the Venezuelan capital Caracas early Saturday. According to media reports, a senior Venezuelan official said that 80 people were killed in the attack. In a low-income neighborhood in eastern Caracas, construction worker Daniel Medalla sat on the steps outside a Catholic church. He told some devotees that there would be no morning prayer meeting again.

Medalla said the reason the streets were empty is not because people fear another attack, but because they fear government repression if they dare celebrate. He said that the government had taken severe action during last year’s tense elections.
